Madrid may not sit on the coast, but don’t let that fool you – this city knows how to do paella incredibly well! Just thinking about the smoky saffron threads and perfectly crisped socarrat right at the bottom is making my mouth water, which is hard if you aren’t near a local joint.

1. Spanish Cooking Class Paella Tapas and Sangria in Madrid

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Departure: C. de Moratín, 11, Centro, 28014 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM, 5:30 PM

Madrid is a city that oozes sophistication, from everything from its boulevards to its arts, its architecture to its cuisine. With a fantastic balance of nightlife, culture, and great weather, it’s no wonder why it’s one of the most visited cities in Europe.

However, if you really want to dive deep into the local culture (while reveling in delicious food and drink), check out the Spanish Cooking Class Paella Tapas and Sangria in Madrid!

This 4-hour tour comes with a few different start times, so you’re bound to find at least one that fits your schedule nicely. Your tour starts with you meeting your expert guide and the rest of your small group in the “Centro” of Madrid, which is well-located for just about anyone.

If you not only want to try some delicious paella, but actually want to know the ins and outs of what makes this one so delicious, look no further.

After arriving, we were paired up (we got to choose, so no, this isn’t like high school), and dove right into the good stuff – listening to our guide share popular local ingredients along with a bit of relevant history.

If you happen to select the morning cooking class, you’ll even get to go altogether to a bustling local market and learn how to select the perfect ingredients. They were super flexible about different dietary restrictions, so I’d advise reaching out if that’s something of concern to you.

While the menu understandably varies a bit based on the tour time you choose, you can count on learning how to make a delicious paella while enjoying a nice sangria, along with starters and a couple of other main dishes (and dessert for dinner tours).

No matter what you pick, you’ll get to enjoy your hearty meal around the table after whipping it all up, and your guide will even send you home with a recipe guide to all the dishes you’ve made so you can make them whenever you get the craving

2. Paella Cooking Class in Madrid with Bottomless Wine Pairing

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Departure: C. de Atocha, 76, Centro, 28012 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 2:30 PM

Next up, is the Paella Cooking Class in Madrid with Bottomless Wine Pairing – perfect for a romantic date night unlike any other! Instead of going out for a nice dinner, why not learn how to make these mouthwatering dishes any time you feel like celebrating something special?

This class will take you through the intricacies of Spanish cuisine, teaching you how to craft 4 appetizers, a main course, and 2 yummy desserts. This cooking class starts out in the afternoon, timing it so that by the time you and your group are finished right when dinnertime hits.

As the name suggests, you’ll not only be enjoying amazing cuisine but also get to try a wide array of fantastic national wines perfectly paired to your dishes. If that’s not a great way to spend an afternoon in Madrid, I don’t know what is!

I’d heard a lot about how cooking, eating, and drinking was deeply woven into Spanish culture, playing a big role in the social climate of the country – this tour really made me “get” it.

Our guides were so fun and sweet, quite literally welcoming us into the class with a rich glass of Cava, setting the tone for an educational, wholesome experience I’d recommend to anyone. Even though the wine plays a big aspect of the excursion, I’d still say it’s a great choice if you’re coming with the entire family (kids included), due to the patience and friendliness of the chefs.

Work in pairs, making your own paella, learning all about what makes this one so great, along with 2 appetizers (we made an amazing seafood and mushroom selection). As if that weren’t enough, the atmosphere was lovely, the people were lovely, and we learned a bunch of cooking tricks and tips I’ll be sure to apply from here on out!

3. Traditional Paella & Wine Tasting Cooking Class

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Departure: C/ de Hortaleza, 92, Centro, 28004 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM, 5:30 PM
  • Includes: Paella cooking class, fully hands-on experience, wine tasting

Perhaps you’re on the hunt for a slightly shorter paella cooking class, with an ultra-small group of people there to learn alongside you. If you’re searching for a more “homey”, personalized vibe while still staying on a budget, the Traditional Paella & Wine Tasting Cooking Class is right up your alley.

It’s a fantastic intro to the iconic Spanish dish, as well as some of the finest wines the region has to offer – let’s get started! Start off by meeting up with your chef guide and the rest of your group right in the Chueca neighborhood right in the center of Madrid, where you’ll actually learn how to whip up the dish right from the comfort of your chef’s home!

Imagine you have a good friend who just so happens to be an incredible cook and is a local to Madrid, and you can pretty much imagine what this tour is going to be like. On top of all that, this tour is easily one of the most accommodating, so if you need to adapt the menu in any way, you can do that with her collaboration.

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by your new friend who feels like you’ve known her for ages, with no less than a pitcher of sangria before you make your way into cooking! Starting at noon, I recommend skipping lunch so you can fully enjoy your creations – perhaps moving dinner to later in the evening, too!

Paloma did a great job of explaining each step to us while showing us different methods, making it super easy to learn quickly. Somehow along the way between all the laughing and insight into Spanish culture, we whipped up fabulous tortilla and paella, sitting down around the table to enjoy it while talking about our travels.

I highly recommend this tour to anyone of any age or background, even if you’ve made paella before!

4. Tapas & Paella Cooking Class in Madrid with a Professional Chef

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Departure: C. de Valderribas, 30, Retiro, 28007 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 11:00 AM, 7:00 PM
  • Includes: Tapas and paella cooking class, drinks of white and red wine, beer, soft drinks, and water

I have to admit that I wasn’t much of a tapas fan before I came upon this tour – it just seemed a bit chaotic to me in a way I didn’t understand.

However, after the Tapas & Paella Cooking Class in Madrid with a Professional Chef, I learned it’s about the social aspect, the rhythm, and the almost randomness that all just kind of works together unexpectedly.

This tour directly tapped into that vibe, skipping the tourist stuff and offering a glimpse into the magnificent local culture and how there’s no social atmosphere without some good food!

There’s something about this tour that just felt a bit more exclusive and cozy than most of the other cooking tours I’ve been on (not only in Madrid). Our guide was of course very welcoming and enthusiastic, and warned us to bring a big appetite because we were going to be making and trying a ton of good eats!

The chefs are all locals who really have a feel for what quality paella means, complete with some interesting and iconic tapas that you just have to try.

No matter if you’re a pro in the kitchen or a complete newbie, you’re going to fit right in and learn easily with a helpful guide there to make sure you know what you’re doing every step of the way.

The open, modern kitchen was easy to move around, making it perfect for cooking groups, where there are a lot of moving parts – no need to take turns or wait. We prepared melty ham croquettes, black rice paella, Russian salad, garlicky ajorriero-style cod, and a few other tasty treats you’ll be able to easily replicate once you’re back home!

Aside from learning how to cook, this was also one of the most educational cooking tours I’ve had the pleasure of taking – we really learned about the history of each one, different specialties by region, and how they came to be in the first place.

I would’ve been happy with that, but we then got to taste plenty of perfectly-paired Spanish wines with our food, which only made it that much better.

5. Paella Workshop with Bottomless Sangria in Central Madrid

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Departure: C. de la Montera, 24, Centro, 28013 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 12:30 PM, 7:30 PM
  • Includes: Cooking class, sangria, paella meal

I worked as a bartender in quite a few different spots – from the upscale to dive – and no one was every able to make a sangria like the one we did in this next class.

The Paella Workshop with Bottomless Sangria in Central Madrid is perfect if you’re looking to not only finesse your sangria skills but also want to be able to create a mouthwatering paella that everyone will be raving about.

Taking place right in the heart of central Madrid, there’s no better place to learn from while surrounded by the history and architecture this incredible place is known for.

What really sets this tour apart is that it feels just a bit more lawless than the others – perhaps it’s the sangria, or just the good vibes alone, but this one had some serious energy to it!

We met right in El Centro (super easy to get to), heading inside with our chef hosts, who welcomed us in and instantly dove into teaching us how to make authentic deliciousness. If you’re a solo traveler, I’d say this one ranks right at the top for interactiveness, making it easy to make some other traveler friends.

Something I really liked about this class was that it featured a completely different section for the cooking class, as well as a different area of the home for us to enjoy our dinner in. Some have you eat right there at the kitchen, which feels a bit more sterile and academic than homey if you know what I mean.

We made a delicious paella with seafood and chicken, though if you have food restrictions, they’re more than happy to accommodate if you let them know beforehand.

There’s not a moment to even think about boredom here, with guides who make sure that everyone is included, with a hands-on, educational experience you’re sure to never forget. The sangria was amazing, and they were so thoughtful they even offered non-alcoholic sangria for those who choose not to imbibe.

As if that weren’t enough, they even sent us photos of the tour the next day, along with recipes for everything we made!
