St. Kitts Tour Guide

Best St Kitts snorkel Tours

Getting There

Getting to St. Kitts from the US is super easy, especially if you’re flying from the Midwest or east coast. It’s just a 3-hour flight from Miami and 4 hours from New York. You’ll find many nonstop flights serviced by American, Delta, United Airlines, and Seaborne into Robert Bradshaw Airport.

If you’re taking a cruise, there are many ships that pull into Port Zante (where most of our tours go out of), due to it being a deep-water port that can support these enormous cruise liners. If you’re already in St. Maarten, there is a ferry service that you can take to St. Kitts, that’s pretty, affordable, and convenient.

Getting Around

Getting around St. Kitts is actually quite easy, with various modes of public transport available and a relatively walkable area.

Car – If you’d like to be completely independent and go out and explore everything you want without waiting around, renting a car is a pretty good decision. You can reserve everything from luxury vehicles to minivans, SUVs, and even motorbikes.

One caveat, though, is that you must obtain a driver’s permit before driving on the island. Yes, this includes if you have an international driver’s license. Please note that they also drive on the left-hand side of the road!

Scooter/Bike Rental – St. Kitts has such nice weather typically, that we feel one of the best ways to see it is on the back of a semi-automatic/ATV. If you’re looking to do some snorkeling, then chances are you like adventure already. These are adventurous, a load of fun, and will get you from point A to point B quickly.

Taxi/Minibus – Both of these local transportation options are great, but note that with taxis there’ll be a 50% surcharge between 10am and 6am. If you’re going from the airport to the city, you’re best taking an airport. Taxis will always be waiting outside, and are known to be reputable and safe.

Walking – Bassaterre is such a beautiful place, and you can walk around very easily. Port Zanta is less than 20 minutes walking from Basseterre, so realistically you don’t need a car or taxi here.

Where to Stay

Park Hyatt St. Kits Christophe Harbor – This absolutely gorgeous 5-star hotel looking over Christophe Harbor has Caribbean vibes throughout. The views of the water are incredible, especially from the infinity pool!

Belle Mont Farm – This is another luxe spot which is located on a 400-acre, eco-friendly farm on Mount Liamuiga. You’ll see “ripe fruit” signs, a bunch of restaurants, and bars located here. Enjoy the gourmet meals and the fresh air when staying here.

Koi Resort St. Kitts – This swanky resort feels a bit Southeast Asian, with a sleek and minimal design, polished wood, and gorgeous ocean overlooks. Their KOI restaurant also has some nice dishes. Definitely try the miso-bronzed cod!

Sugar Bay Club – Located in the Frigate Bay area, it consists of 2-story buildings and single-story Caribbean-style cottages. The outdoor waterfall swimming pool and beautiful ocean views offer a luxurious stay.

Timothy Beach Resort – Located on acres of pristine, preserved land and sea, the rich green and blue hues are always captivating from this resort. It’s relatively small and privately-owned, which gives it a more authentic feel.

Restaurants and Eating Out

If you’re a foodie, you’ll love St. Kitts.

Arthur’s – Only open seasonally, it sits right on Dieppe Bay, where you can even watch local fisherman bring in their catch! This “sea-to-fork” restaurant offers fresh mahi mahi, snapper, ceviche, conch, lobster, and pumpkin fritters with pumpkin ice cream for dessert!

The Gallery Café – This is a really special spot, melding art gallery with café. Located in the main square in Basseterre, the location couldn’t be better. Enjoy the colorful artworks while munching on their fresh bagels, cakes, frittatas, or cookies.

Ballahoo – Also overlooking Basseterre’s center, it comes with a massive menu with dishes like BBQ chicken wraps all the way to sushi. We highly recommend the coconut curry prawns or frozen mango/passion fruit Ballahootini!

Sprat Net – This is the place to go if you want to watch the ballgame. With long benches, it’s perfect for bringing in the entire family or enjoying socializing with locals. Oh, and they have some amazing pizza and ribs.

Jam Rock – This is a quintessential local Caribbean place, with incredible Frigate Bay Strip where you’ll get a mix of meat and seafood dishes. The Jamaican Jerk Chicken is incredible.

Royal Palm Restaurant – Located inside the Ottley’s plantation, Royal Palm is another hidden gem that we love. This is the place for brunch, where you’ll get an array of fresh local fruits, mini cakes, pastries, etc. to choose from.

Salt Plage – This is such a trendy, fun spot to grab some drinks and appetizers at. Better yet, wait until the sun starts setting so you can enjoy the waterside views to the max. You can even arrive here by boat!

Nightlife and Entertainment

Chrishi Beach Club – While it does have daytime parties, Chrishi is still one of the best spots to hang out after the sun sets. There are plenty of chaise lounges and beach waterbeds, with European café-type food. Check it out on Saturday night, where there are film nights, DJs spinning, and more.

Circus Grill – If you’re on the hunt for a good happy hour, look no further. Great deals, friendly staff, and nice views of the harbor will make sure you never want to leave.

Keys Lounge – The name pretty much says it for you, but the Keys Lounge is a great spot if you’re looking for a sophisticated date night option or just want to enjoy some top-notch jazz and salsa music. Their comfortable sofas and chess-set tables along with their wonderfully-curated aged rum selection is the perfect way to spend an evening.

Mr. X’s Shiggidy Shack – This is truly one of the best ways to meet locals, and it’s a unique experience we highly recommend partaking in at least once. They have these legendary Thursday night bonfire parties, with fire-eating performers or something even more daring – karaoke.

Water Department Barbecue – Ran by a couple of guys from the local water department (yes, this is true), they put on a massive grill with tons of barbecue ribs and chicken! This is another classic Caribbean scene that we recommend checking out if you’re new to the area. If you want something exciting to try on Friday nights, this is the spot.

Club Kactus – Perhaps you’re looking for a packed spot where you can watch great musical acts perform. Club Kactus has excellent customer service, despite being so busy on the weekend nights. The Jamaican music just sets the tone for a wonderful night out in the Caribbean, and the kitchen offers some tasty local dishes!

Vibes Beach Bar – This is one of the most popular nighttime spots on The Strip, with great music, house cocktails, and sports on the big-screen TVs. The open-air bar offers great views of the beach, and makes it easy to transition from a day at the beach. DJs perform every night during the week, and there are occasionally special party nights on the weekends.

You should know that no matter what time of year you go, St. Kitts is going to be pretty warm. However, there are certain times of year where it gets wet and windy, as it is a place vulnerable to both cyclones and hurricanes! This can cause some intense storm surges. Humidity is pretty normal, however if you go from around January to May you’ll experience a dryer climate that most people prefer.

Brimstone Hill Fortress – This National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and rightfully so. Having been around for many centuries, this is a perfect example of the British military engineers’ intelligence and the difficulties African slaves who built it had to endure. Located on a steep incline, there were many who lost their lives building the fortress of limestone.

Fairview Great House – This 18th-century building has been restored to what it was in its hey-day. You’ll be able to take a full tour, with the beautiful dining room, Historical Room which details the past of the house, the master bedroom veranda, amazing views of the sea, and more. Don’t forget to watch out for the monkeys who love to munch the fresh fruit on the property!

Old Treasury Building & Museum – Constructed in 1894 in downtown Basseterre, it has been used to house the offices of the administrator, customs, audit, supply, and post office. The 2-story Georgian-style building is very unique, with a huge dome once used as a lighthouse!

Romney Manor – Over centuries, this manor was run by Earls of Romney. Make sure to check out the 300-year-old Saman tree, which has surely seen some things!

St. George’s Anglican Church – First built in 1670 as a Roman Catholic Church by French Jesuits, it’s seen many bloody fights, fires, hurricanes, and so much more. Unfortunately, in 1706 it was completely destroyed by fire during the Anglo-French War by the British. Rebuilt in 1710, it then became a general place of worship for the Anglicans.

Church of Immaculate Conception – This detailed church made of grey stone is located right in Independence Square in Basseterre. The Roman Catholics were forbidden in the early 1700s to worship in public, and in 1829 those restrictions were finally removed. Catholicism started taking off with the influx of Irish and Portuguese, and so this church was built in 1856.

  1. Bring some solid walking shoes. You’re going to likely be walking around in some uneven terrain, up and down hills, and through older buildings.
  2. Wear layers. As the climate can change in an instant, it’s better to wear a tank top or t-shirt under warmer layers so you can add or subtract as the day and night go on.
  3. If you’re going to drive, you have to pay to get a local drivers’ license and be able to drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  4. Enjoy the nature. Aside from the beautiful beaches, there is so much lush, untouched nature to explore. Try hiking the Mount Liamuiga volcano for the best views!
  5. Try the dune buggies. While going out on the water certainly has its charm, the dune buggy adventures that go all across the islands are unreachable by regular car. You’ll definitely see some spots you wouldn’t be able to any other way.
