You’re not getting on a plastic catamaran built last decade. You’re getting on a piece of Swiss engineering history that still shows up to work every day.

Why Lake Lucerne Cruises Are Worth Your Time

Lake Lucerne is called the Vierwaldstättersee locally, which translates to “four forest lake,” named for the four cantons around its shore. It’s 38 kilometers of water carved between mountains.

The boat is genuinely the best way to see it. Not the scenic way. The best way, full stop.

The lake company, SGV, runs 21 ships total. Five of them are the real draw, restored paddle steamers built between 1901 and 1928.

They’re the largest working fleet of paddle steamers on any inland lake anywhere in the world. The other 16 are modern motor vessels that handle the routine runs.

Here’s who this is for. Anyone who wants mountain views without hiking for them.

It’s the newest, the largest at 1,200 passengers, and the one you’ll most likely end up on for a standard scheduled run. It does the heaviest rotation of the five, so odds are in your favor.

The Motor Vessels

The 16 modern boats handle the shorter hops and the shuttle route between Lucerne and Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock. They’re fine. They’re just not why you came.

You’ll board at Bahnhofquai, the pier right next to the Lucerne train station. Most southbound routes to Weggis, Vitznau, Brunnen, and Flüelen leave from Pier 1.

Vitznau

Gersau
