How to Choose a Yoga Retreat

best yoga retreats in Costa Rica

Location –

First things first, you want to make sure that the location for your yoga retreat is ideal. Make sure that it’s at least within an hour or so from a major airport with preferably direct flights from the US (or wherever you’ll be flying from). You don’t want to arrive to your retreat absolutely exhausted, right?

Costa Rica is a small country but it has plenty of rainforests, mountains, and bodies of water so make sure it’s also convenient to access with a shuttle.

Not only that, you’ll want a retreat that’s close to other points of interest. Beaches, restaurants, hiking, stores, and so on are all places you’ll probably want to visit while you’re there!

Focus Of Retreat

Some yoga retreats are just that: they offer you yoga practice and instruction and when you’re not doing yoga you have all the free time to yourself. However, there are others that have other focuses aside from just yoga.

Detox yoga retreats are increasingly common, and they usually come with included lessons on detoxing, treatments or therapies with on-site naturopathic doctors, and so on. Others focus on complete relaxation in mind and body. You may do yoga, but also partake in meditation sessions, and oftentimes these come with included massage sessions.

Duration

How long do you want to realistically be at your yoga retreat for? Most will last anywhere from 4 to 10 days. Usually the detox retreats are going to last a bit longer, as you will want to follow their guidance, juices, etc. for more days to see full benefits.

However, not everyone has the ability to take off for 10 days. If you have a long weekend and really want to improve your yoga skills or simply clear your mind, the 4-day retreats are a great option.

Level Of Accommodations

Make sure that before you book, you know what kind of accommodations to expect. Some of the more affordable retreats offer accommodations that are pretty basic. In most cases, these will be a shared double room with another participant or another person you’re traveling with.

Some offer shared “cabinas” or cabins, that have a communal bathroom. If you’d like to pay more, you can reserve a room all to yourself, with a private bathroom, full, private kitchen, and more. Some even come with your own private rooftop deck with amazing views!

Retreat Size

Obviously, the larger group sizes are going to offer you a bit less attention from your instructors than the smaller ones will. Most of them cap off at 16 participants, however, so it’s not like these are going to be massive retreats anyway.

Some people do enjoy being around more people, so if you’re one of those that feel “the more, the merrier”, then pay attention to this. Retreats usually aren’t smaller than 10 participants, but with multiple instructors, you’ll get a lot of personalized attention.

Type Of Yoga

As you can see from the retreats we already covered, each one will cover different types of yoga. Some even cover multiple types of yoga. Let’s talk about each type briefly to help you narrow down which are most ideal for you and your goals.

Vinyasa – This style is considered to be the most “athletic” of the bunch. Developed from Ashtanga yoga in the 70s, some also use “Vinyasa Flows” like Ashtanga, Power Yoga, and Prana. Most Western countries already use some type of this.

Hatha – This refers to pretty much all other types of yoga grounded in a physical practice (at least this is the case in the West). This is a very popular style and is great for beginners due to the generally slower pace than other styles.

Ashtanga – In Mysore, India, people gather to practice Ashtanga and you should know the series. As we just mentioned Vinyasa does stem from this style, with the “flow” linking breath to movement. It’s more physically demanding, and ideal for more advanced yogis.

Yin – Yin is a yoga style great for all skill levels. It’s perfect for beginners as it is more slow-paced. However, even advanced yogis can find it challenging as the seated postures are held for longer periods of time. It’s often used in conjunction with meditation sessions due to the fact that it is often known as “meditative” yoga.

Restorative – This type of yoga helps you wind down, get rid of stress, and just relax your mind and body. It’s great for all skill levels, involving fewer postures than many other yoga types. Many props are used, in an effort to help you sink even deeper into your relaxation.

Other

So here some mention of are there surf boards, bikes, kayaks etc available so here are some bullets points to talk about:

  • Transport From Airport – Transport from the airport is pretty important unless you want to deal with renting a car and driving yourself! However, not every retreat includes parking so that’s not the ideal option. Retreats should have this included, though some transport is free and some are available at a price.
  • Meals – Make sure that you know ahead of time if your meals are included or not. Most retreats include breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, some include all of that, snacks, juices, coffee, tea, and more. Others just include breakfast and dinner so you’ll have to head to a local restaurant or store in order to cover your food.
  • Excursions – Not every retreat offers excursions, and focuses more on doing activities at the retreat like hanging out in their gardens, at the pool, jacuzzi, hiking around the area, and going to the beach. Many others do offer excursions as a group which can be a great way to balance relaxation with adventure! Some include waterfall hikes, horseback rides, ziplining, bike rentals, surf board rentals, and more!
  • Languages Spoken – Make sure that you’ll be able to effectively communicate with your yoga instructors and staff! It’s pretty much expected that the instructors and staff will speak Spanish and English. However, some speak German, Italian, and other languages as well!
  • Skill Levels Taught – If you’re an absolute beginner, you’re probably not going to get as much benefit out of an advanced yoga retreat, and vice-versa. Most of the retreats on our guide are perfect for all skill levels, but make sure you check this out before booking.
