Let’s start things off on the right foot, with the Red (North) Tour Cappadocia (small group) with Lunch and Tickets excursion.

It’s perfect if you’re short on time or it’s your first time in the city, taking you to see some of the most famous historical sites with an expert local guide there to lead the way.

With a small-group setting maxing out at just 10 participants, you can expect a more personalized vibe rather than getting herded around in a massive crowd of people.

Your day starts off in the morning with your guide coming right to your hotel to pick you up in a climate-controlled coach. I would recommend having breakfast beforehand if you can, as lunch isn’t until around 2 pm.

Once we boarded, our guide began to share plenty of interesting stories about the city’s background as we made our way to the incredible Uchisar Castle, which is the area’s tallest freestanding rock formation.

You’ll have plenty of time to grab some photos here before continuing on to the UNESCO site, Göreme, which does a magnificent job of showing off cave churches complete with frescoes!

Some of these date back to before the 9th century, so to be able to witness “life” first-hand from this era was really something special. By this time, we were definitely eager to get some food so we went for a full-on Turkish feast, which was a great intro to the local cuisine.

We rested and were ready to take on the amazing fairy chimneys, where we actually got to stroll and even climb around!

The pottery in Avanos was spectacular as well, and we even got to visit a traditional pottery workshop to see it all unfold while learning about the red clay history and craft techniques practiced here. Lastly, we saw the bizarre but cool Imagination Valley!

Of all the places in the world, I’d definitely recommend getting a proper guide to make sense of Cappadocia. It’s not necessarily difficult to navigate, but the landscape is just so wild, that it can sometimes feel like you’re on another planet’s maze without a map.

Of course, with a tour like the North Cappadocia Red Tour with Lunch and Transfers, it all starts to make sense with a perfectly sequenced itinerary laid out for you.

You can count on covering the region’s most important (and visually striking!) spots without feeling like your guide is just going through the motions and reading from a script.

Your day will start off with your guide picking you up from your hotel around 9:30 am, which was nice as we had some time to sleep in and eat beforehand. We were given a quick briefing of what to expect and had time to chat and answer any questions we had before arriving in Avanos.

Once there, we were treated to a fascinating pottery demonstration, learning all about how it’s one of the oldest craft traditions in Anatolia.

Sitting right on the river banks, they have a virtually limitless clay supply – it was really beautiful to see the intricate ceramic work right in front of us, and I grabbed a couple of pieces to take home with me. Next up, was Çavusin, with the 5th-century Church of St. John the Baptist, whose preserved paintings are some of the earliest Christian frescoes in the area.

We learned all about how the settlement here is actually one of the oldest in the country, and our guide did a great job of explaining the layered occupation history, which had previously been a bit challenging for me to grasp.

Devrent Valley was another highlight and a lighthearted contrast to the heavier stuff before moving on to the Zelve Open Air Museum, Pasabag Valley, Uchisar Castle, and more. With a hearty lunch, entry tickets, and transportation all included, what more could you ask for?

3. Cappadocia Mix Tour Half Green Tour and Half Red Tour

Visiting Cappadocia for the first time was really intriguing in so many ways, with one of the revelations being that you’re pretty limited if you can only sightsee for a day.

That’s because the area’s most significant landmarks are split between 2 different geographic and thematic sections: the northern “Red Tour” route and the southern “Green Tour” route.

On the red, you will see things like the volcanic landscape and Byzantine cave churches, and on the green, underground cities, and deeper Anatolian civilization layers.

It can be hard to decide between them, and with the Cappadocia Mix Tour Half Green Tour and Half Red Tour, you no longer have to! It’s undoubtedly one of the best ways to see the city if you’re really short on time.

I’ll admit that I was a bit apprehensive about just how complete the experience would be, or if we’d just be zooming from place to place, checking off spots. I’m happy to report that it was anything but that.

We started out by getting picked up at our hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, heading straight to Cavusin to see some old Greek homes, learning about why they were abandoned over 100 years ago.

After that, we tried a ton of incredible traditional cuisine in Avanos before heading to the pottery workshop to learn about the art form and even try the wheel to make our own pot!Next up was the majestic Uchisar Castle and the unique landscapes found here, along with the Christian/monastic history in the Zelve Open Air museum.

The interesting rock formations didn’t stop there as we continued on to the Devrent Valley, followed by the fascinating Kaymakli Underground City – the largest and deepest underground settlement that dates back thousands of years.

Lastly, we went to take some photos and soak in the incredible views at Pigeon Valley, even seeing the pigeon homes made of stone by ancient residents.

Our guide was super sweet and considerate, making sure everyone was comfortable, answering our questions, and of course, sharing lots of interesting commentary along the way. Our first stop was at the Uchisar Castle, which really was breathtaking – you’ll get to experience some of the largest fairy chimneys and even get some time under the castle.

There’s plenty of time to take photos, learn all about its geology and history, and explore at your leisure before continuing on to the Zelve Open Air Museum. Here, you’ll soak in the otherworldly cave dwellings, churches, and monasteries carved into the wild-looking rock formations while learning about Muslim and Christian history.

After, continue on to the Devrent Valley for more surreal chimneys and moon-like scenery before stopping for a tasty lunch either at a buffet or regular restaurant.

After refueling, continue on to the Avanos Pottery Workshop, which is a must-see, offering insight into the craft, the techniques, and even giving you the chance to try your hand at it, too.

Lastly, head to Love Valley, where you’ll get the most extreme mushroom chimney sights, and perhaps even a chance to see some hot air balloons.

As one of the most smoothly run operations I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing, expect only the best in every aspect! With a small-group setting maxing out at just 15 participants, you’ll benefit from a more intimate environment where you aren’t fighting to hear your guide or ask questions.

Just like all of the other tours in this guide, your excursion begins with a convenient hotel pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle. Kick things off with the fascinating Uchisar Castle as you take photos, appreciate the views, and listen to the geology and history of the area, which is equally as intriguing.

Next up, spend some time at the Zelve Open Air Museum, where you’ll get some free time to venture through the homes, tunnels, mosques, churches, etc. that span different types of religious contexts.

One aspect that you won’t find on every Red Tour is a trip to the Özkonak Underground City, comprised of a labyrinth of tunnels and rooms, including chapels, a winery, stables, and much more. Devrent Valley’s oddly-shaped rock formations are up next, before stopping for a delicious Turkish lunch in Göreme.
