It’s one thing to look like a place is from a postcard, but it’s another entirely to look like it belongs in a storybook.

The Avila & Segovia Tour with Tickets to Monuments from Madrid is a deep dive into Spain’s medieval past, with a full day of venturing through centuries-old streets, soaking up incredible architecture, traditional food, and more. With all logistics handled for you, all you have to do is relax and enjoy the scenery!

This 9-hour tour starts off at 9 am, where you’ll meet with your guide and the rest of your small-group tour to hop on a luxury bus complete with air-conditioning, wifi, and comfortable seating.

Along the way, our guide shared all kinds of interesting geological and historical commentary about the area, passing by incredible places like the Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama, Las Murallas de Avila, the Catedral de Avila, and more.

We made our first stop at the incredible Basilica de San Vicente, dating back to the 11th century, displaying why it’s known as one of the best and most unique examples of Roman Spanish architecture (more on that shortly).

Seeing the Church-Convent of Santa Teresa – supposedly the site where Saint Teresa was born – was also incredible, complete with our guide’s fascinating historical accounts! We then headed to Segovia where we saw the most well-preserved Roman architecture in the country, perhaps: the Acueducto de Segovia.

he Cathedral and Alcazar of Segovia are equally as impressive, with charming yet enchanting Gothic architecture that melds in perfectly with their surroundings. With incredibly knowledgeable, friendly guides, they made the experience that much more enjoyable for everyone – 10/10!

If you want to understand Spain – the “real” Spain – you really need to head out of Madrid for at least the day. The Toledo and Segovia Full-Day Tour with an Optional Visit to Avila is the perfect way to do so, with a history-packed adventure to 2 of the most iconic cities in the country.

With local expert guides, you’ll get to see not only the main sites but plenty of hidden gems you’d likely not get to see, otherwise. As this is one of the longest all-day tours of its kind, expect for it to start early in the morning, with a convenient pickup location right in central Madrid.

Our transportation was super comfortable, with padded seats, lots of legroom, and big windows ideal for watching the beautiful scenery roll by. Our guide did such a great job of providing us with a historical intro to each city before we arrived in Toledo, so we already had a base of knowledge for reference upon arrival!

Once we got off the coach, we stretched our legs with a fascinating walking tour of the captivating medieval architecture, seeing sights like the Mirador del Valle (perfect for photo ops!) and the legendary Catedral de Toledo.

We stopped for a nice coffee and some snacks, then a cool “damasquinado” craft workshop before the 2-hour ride to Segovia where we stopped first for a delicious lunch, fueling us up for the charming walking tour along the cobblestone streets.

If you’re at all interested in Roman architecture or history, you’re bound to fall in love with Segovia, which boasts some of the most impressive examples – the Aqueducto being perhaps the most famous of them all.

The Alcazar is a 12th-century castle with a crazy amount of stories about dozens of royals, military members, and prisoners, and holds the title of being the inspiration behind Cinderella’s Castle! You’ll get to see it inside and out on your guided walking tour, before having around 2 hours of free time to go back and explore at your leisure!

3. Private Day Tour: Segovia and Ávila with Hotel Pickup

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 8 hours

  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM & 10:00 AM
  • Includes: Bottled water, luxury transport with air-conditioning, professional bilingual driver-guide, customizable itinerary

Have you ever been on a tour and felt like it was just rushing through the most interesting parts, or simply didn’t cover what you most wanted to see? I’ve been there, and can say that’s where customized itineraries like the Private Day Tour: Segovia and Avila with Hotel Pickup excursion really shine.

See two cities that have seen the dramatic rise and fall of empires, Roman architecture, walls that have held up against war, and so much more – all with an expert guide to lead you.

As this tour is a bit more “VIP” than most, expect your guide to come right to your hotel lobby to pick you and your party up in your luxury, air-conditioned transport for the day. Before this happens, though, your guide will reach out to ask about your specific interests and organize an itinerary based on exactly that.

You’ll get to skip the stuff you aren’t as interested in and focus on what you are, taking as much time as you want at each site. Our transportation was just a nice car, which made it super easy to drive around and navigate the cities – plus, it was like our guide was more of a longtime local friend than someone we’d just met.

We were able to chat more in-depth about Spain’s history and ask any and all questions we had, arriving first to the incredible Segovia for some architectural explorations and good eats! The highlight for me was eating some delicious roasted meat before checking out the fairytale-like Alcazar, where we checked out the insane towers and other power architecture features.

Next up was Avila, filled with amazing natural and manmade vistas, like the Murallas, the Cathedral, and the Santa Teresa Convent! We also had some great food, like the Santa Teresa yolks and patatas revolconas! To be able to have a private driver and guide is simply invaluable in a place like this, so enjoy!

The Avila with Walls & Segovia with Alcazar from Madrid is a fantastic option if you’re on a tighter budget but still want to dive into Spain’s medieval past without any gimmicks.

I actually still can’t believe this tour was so affordable, considering the high quality you receive in return – comfortable transportation, thorough tours of many iconic places, and an expert guide there to bring the past to life through grade-A storytelling.

Wake up early in the morning and head to Julia Travel Madrid located in the city center, which is super easy to access – especially as you’ll likely be staying in the area, anyway.

After meeting with your guide, you’ll hop on an air-conditioned coach with your tour group and admire the scenery passing by as your guide regales you all with captivating historical and cultural tales.

Before arriving in Avila proper, we stopped at the legendary Four Posts viewpoint to take photos and of course, take in the sights of the impeccable 11th-century walls and towers around Avila.

We had plenty of time in Avila to learn about and see the walls that wrap around it, along with some of the most beautiful Romanesque and Gothic churches I’ve ever seen!

Next up was a 2-hour drive to Segovia, which is known for its incredibly well-preserved, 2-story Roman aqueduct and the Alcazar fortress which inspired Disney’s Cinderella’s Castle. We also had a relaxing, filling lunch comprised of traditional Segovian dishes, which were quite different from what I’d tried in bigger cities like Madrid!

Our guide relayed all info in both English and Spanish, which was not only impressive but perfect for our group which consisted of many bilinguals in both languages. Overall, it was a great day that I’d recommend to anyone of any age or background!

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that most places are somehow “polished” over time – they kind of get repackaged in a way, with skyscrapers or offices taking place of older, more interesting structures.

Thankfully, cities like Avila and Segovia have remained impossibly intact, showcasing medieval walls and castles just the way they were hundreds of years ago. If you’re curious to step back in time, check out the Avila & Segovia Tour with Tickets to Monuments from Madrid, complete with an expert guide to lead the way.

Your tour kicks off at 9 in the morning in central Madrid, which is easy to get to and the check-in process is a breeze. The transportation, like with most others on this list, will be an air-conditioned coach ideal for sightseeing without having to drive yourself there.

The journey to Avila was beautiful in itself, passing by incredible mountain ranges all while learning about the history and culture within the region from our guide.

We approached Avila, which is surrounded by the incredible walls completed in the Middle Ages, and it’s hard to believe they’re in such fantastic shape!

We learned about how the wall not only controlled the ins and outs of merchants and other visitors but also kept its citizens protected from things like plague outbreaks or epidemics. After visiting interior architecture like the Cathedral of Avila, and Convent, and the Basilica de San Vicente, we then headed over to Segovia.

In Segovia you’ll see the common big sights like the Aquaduct, the Cattedrale di Segovia, and the Alcazar, all while your guide gives you a comprehensive explanation and storytelling about each one.

For being a rather large tour group, I was thoroughly impressed by how smooth the logistics were executed, providing us with headphones to ensure we always heard our guide no matter where we were.
