Another twenty minutes of paddling and you’re backing into a grotto where the water glows a green so bright it looks lit from underneath. That’s Emerald Cave, and it’s one of the few Las Vegas day trips that has nothing to do with a casino, a buffet, or a show.

Why This Is Worth the Drive

Emerald Cave sits in Black Canyon on the Colorado River, just below Hoover Dam, near a spot called Willow Beach in Arizona. It’s about an hour from the Strip.

It’s good for people who want an actual outdoor day, not a bus tour where you look at scenery through a window. You’re the one paddling.

It’s good for beginners too, which surprises people. The Willow Beach stretch of river is calm and protected, and most operators put first timers in the same kayak fleet as experienced paddlers.

It’s not good if you’re set on the idea of paddling through a tunnel of rock. Emerald Cave is a grotto you back into, not a cave you paddle straight through, and a few people show up expecting something it isn’t.
