This is one of the most beautiful tours I’ve ever been on, to the point that even if you’re not necessarily a wine drinker, I’d recommend it. You get to see and learn about a landscape shaped over 2 millennia, learning all about the history and culture that have taken place here, tying it into wine production.

Your day starts off at 9:30 am, so you do have some time to grab coffee or breakfast beforehand without waking up at the crack of dawn. Our guide picked us up at our hotel, so we didn’t have to deal with organizing transportation or finding a meet-up spot ourselves.

Our vehicle for the day was a nice little air-conditioned minivan, which was perfect for our group size of just 4 people. As we went along, our guide offered a nice little intro to the wine region, so that by the time we arrived at our first stop, we already had a solid amount of background knowledge.

After that, we made our way to Pinhão for a photo stop at a breathtaking viewpoint, then arrived at the departure point for a serene 50-minute Rabelo boat cruise in a flat-bottomed vessel that we learned was what historically transported Port wine barrels down the river to Vila Nova de Gala!

It was really cool to learn about the background from a first-person perspective, and after that, we finished up with a second winery stop in Folgosa for a nice 3-wine flight followed by a vineyard-to-bottle estate walk.
