Do you ever feel like a lot of tours just fill your time with “checkmark” activities, where you’re just following around your guide and checking off the biggest points of interest? However, with the Capri Island Day Trip with Boat Cruise from Sorrento Tour, it perfectly balances free time to appreciate the natural beauty along with sightseeing to give you a history of the area.

It really feels like you’re sailing through some kind of real-life postcard. As you cruise along, the skipper will be there to tell fascinating stories, historical accounts, anecdotes, and cultural and artistic relevance throughout time.

Of course, the cruise is really only part of this fantastic experience. When you dock, you have a good 4 hours or so to explore the heart of this gem, starting with the Piazza Umberto I or “Piazzetta”.

The Private Capri Day Trip Tour is one of the best ways to experience this paradise, gliding over the azure waters with the wind in your hair and sun on your skin.

Your voyage starts at 10:00 am, where you’ll meet the captain for the day who will give you a briefing before the tour starts off. Keep in mind that this is a private tour, so that boat is smaller, but this is an intimate experience where you almost feel like a local!

This also means that you get to see areas of Capri that you wouldn’t be able to with a larger ship, which is perfect for those who are adventurers at heart.

Start off with a visit to the fabled “Bagni della Regina Giovanna” – a hidden gem tucked along the Sorrento Coast. Here, it seems like history and nature intertwine, with a small waterfall that helps create a perfectly serene environment.

If you’re looking for a kind of tranquility that the city can’t give you, this is a great little retreat to spend the day at.

You can choose to enter any of the following: The White Grotto, Green Grotto, and the Blue Grotto – however, it is at an extra cost (not much).

As you cruise around your guide will point out various points of interests and explain the history behind such sites like The Statue of Urchin, Jump of Tiberius, Coral Cave, and of course, the Natural Arch.

The Villa Malaparte was one of the most interesting to me, though between the architecture and natural sites, there really was never a dull moment.

I truly appreciated that the guide came right to our hotel to pick us up, so we literally just had to make sure we were ready in our hotel lobby at the agreed-upon time.

No having to worry about booking separate transportation or hoping you’re arriving at the correct meet-up point in a foreign country. After going through a briefing, you’ll hop on the sleek boat and head to the quaint coastal village of Nerano.

As you sit back and relax while sailing along the Punta Campanella Marine Reserve, you’ll enjoy the stunning vistas of Massa Lubrense and Ieranto’s Bay. This is a bit of foreshadowing to the unmatchable beauty that awaits you on the Isle of Capri.

The Capri “All Inclusive Boat Tour + City Visit is one of those tours that you’ll likely remember for the rest of your life. I know that sounds a bit dramatic, but it truly is a tour that has more than everything you can think of, covered.

I’ve had many instances where I’ve taken tours only to be charged extra for transfers, entrance fees, food, etc., but that’s not at all the case here.

Rather, this tour makes you feel like some of your closest friends have welcomed you aboard their boat, featuring all kinds of delicious snacks, drinks, and tons of fun. Whether you’re looking for a bit of excitement or just want to relax, you’re in for a real treat.

This is actually one of the earliest tours as well, which means that we missed a large part of the crowds and got certain places to ourselves.

What to See and Do in Capri

Located in Italy’s Bay of Naples, Capri is known for its “thousand faces”, where you can walk the winding trails on the cliffsides above the Mediterranean sea. Its incredible stretch of coastline is covered in enormous, glitzy villas, making it a destination for celebrities and artists, alike. Made entirely of limestone, the island dates all the way back to the prehistoric age!

History

They say that Capri was first “discovered’ by Emperor Augustus, where he ended up living and building many temples, villas, and gardens to create his own version of paradise. However, archaeologists have found ample proof that the island was inhabited centuries before the Roman Empire even existed – all the way back to the Stone Age!

The earliest mythiacl residents were the Teleboi from Acarnania, and it’s said that Capri used to consist of two towns and later reduced to one. Tiberius also spent the last years of his life there, building 12 villas – the most famous of which being the Villa Jovis (you can still see the ruins today).

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Naples once again began ruling Capri. Due to this, there were many attacks on the island, and was eventually given to the commune of Amalfi. In 1806, French troops under Napoleon took control of the island, and just a few years later, was restored to Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies. In the 19th century, it became a popular artist and celebrity destination, and has been that way ever since.

Sites to See

What to See and Do in Sorrento

This charming little coastal town faces the Bay of Naples, sitting on dramatic cliffs to offer sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Due to its natural and man-made beauty, it’s become a very popular resort town with a small-town feel that will enamor anyone. Known for its juicy and flavorful Sorrentine lemons, high-quality ceramics, lace and marquetry, there’s plenty to do and see here.

History

Likely of Greek origin, Sorrento was once a Roman resort, becoming part of the Norma kingdom of Sicily in 1137. However, from the 8th century BC, there were already various indigenous villages all over the place. You can still see the oldest ruins of Oscan, which date back to around 600 BC!

Thanks to Sorrento’s naturally deep gorges, it was very well-protected from attacks. There are still many ruins in the villa quarter right ot the east of the actual town, though one of the largest sites is now where the Hotel Vitotria sits.

Located under the Hotel Sirena there are interesting finds like a rock-made tunnel, and by Capo di Sorrento there’s another villa called the “Bagni della Regina Giovanna”.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Sorrento was ruled by the Ostrogoths and later turned into an autonomous duchy in the 9th century. There were frequent confilcts between Amalfi, the Saracens, and Lombardic duchies.

The latter of which besieged Sorrento. In 1035 it was acquired by Guaimar IV of Salerno, and eventually was annexed to the Kingdom of Sicily. After much back-and-forth, it was officially annexed to the new Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
