Sightseeing in Capri

Capri and Sorrento Sightseeing

Located in Italy’s Bay of Naples, Capri is known for its “thousand faces”, where you can walk the winding trails on the cliffsides above the Mediterranean sea. Its incredible stretch of coastline is covered in enormous, glitzy villas, making it a destination for celebrities and artists, alike. Made entirely of limestone, the island dates all the way back to the prehistoric age!

History

They say that Capri was first “discovered’ by Emperor Augustus, where he ended up living and building many temples, villas, and gardens to create his own version of paradise. However, archaeologists have found ample proof that the island was inhabited centuries before the Roman Empire even existed – all the way back to the Stone Age!

The earliest mythiacl residents were the Teleboi from Acarnania, and it’s said that Capri used to consist of two towns and later reduced to one. Tiberius also spent the last years of his life there, building 12 villas – the most famous of which being the Villa Jovis (you can still see the ruins today).

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Naples once again began ruling Capri. Due to this, there were many attacks on the island, and was eventually given to the commune of Amalfi. In 1806, French troops under Napoleon took control of the island, and just a few years later, was restored to Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies. In the 19th century, it became a popular artist and celebrity destination, and has been that way ever since.

Sites to See

  • Giardini di Augusto/Gardens of Augustus
  • Piazzetta di Capri
  • Villa San Michele
  • Blue Grotto

  • Villa Lysis

Sightseeing in Sorrento

This charming little coastal town faces the Bay of Naples, sitting on dramatic cliffs to offer sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Due to its natural and man-made beauty, it’s become a very popular resort town with a small-town feel that will enamor anyone. Known for its juicy and flavorful Sorrentine lemons, high-quality ceramics, lace and marquetry, there’s plenty to do and see here.

History

Likely of Greek origin, Sorrento was once a Roman resort, becoming part of the Norma kingdom of Sicily in 1137. However, from the 8th century BC, there were already various indigenous villages all over the place. You can still see the oldest ruins of Oscan, which date back to around 600 BC!

Thanks to Sorrento’s naturally deep gorges, it was very well-protected from attacks. There are still many ruins in the villa quarter right ot the east of the actual town, though one of the largest sites is now where the Hotel Vitotria sits.

Located under the Hotel Sirena there are interesting finds like a rock-made tunnel, and by Capo di Sorrento there’s another villa called the “Bagni della Regina Giovanna”.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Sorrento was ruled by the Ostrogoths and later turned into an autonomous duchy in the 9th century. There were frequent confilcts between Amalfi, the Saracens, and Lombardic duchies.

The latter of which besieged Sorrento. In 1035 it was acquired by Guaimar IV of Salerno, and eventually was annexed to the Kingdom of Sicily. After much back-and-forth, it was officially annexed to the new Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
