If you told me that one of the most breathtaking coastal drives in the world was just a few hours from Rome, I probably would have called you. The Amalfi Coast is hands down one of those destinations that lives up to every single bit of hype you’ve ever heard about it.
Whether you’re dreaming of pastel-colored villages clinging to dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise waters, or some of the best limoncello you’ll ever taste, the Amalfi Coast delivers on all fronts. And the best part? Getting there from Rome is easier than you might think!
I’ve made this trip multiple times now, trying different routes and transportation options each time, so I’m going to break down everything you need to know to plan your own unforgettable Amalfi Coast adventure from Rome.
How Long Does It Take to Get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome?
Your journey from Rome to the Amalfi Coast typically takes between 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on which method you choose and where specifically you’re heading.
If you’re driving, you can expect around 3 hours of travel time to reach popular towns like Positano or Amalfi, though traffic can add time to that estimate, especially during summer weekends. I once hit some serious backup near Salerno and it added nearly an hour to my trip, so definitely factor that in!
By train, expect 2.5 to 3 hours to reach Salerno (the gateway to the Amalfi Coast), plus additional time to connect to your final coastal destination via bus or ferry. The train is one of the most stress-free options.
Different Ways to Get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome
Drive Yourself
If you’re feeling adventurous and want to take a road trip, renting a car and driving is a great option. The route is pretty easy, just take the A1 highway south from Rome toward Naples, then continue on the A3 toward Salerno.
From Salerno, you’ll hop onto the famous SS163 coastal road also known as the Amalfitana which winds its way along the coast through all the picturesque towns you’ve heard about.
While the coastal road is absolutely stunning it’s not for the faint of heart. The road is narrow, winding and often crowded with buses, scooters, and other tourists. Oh, and parking? That’s a whole different challenge. Many coastal towns have limited parking that fills up quickly, and it can be quite expensive.
But if you’re confident behind the wheel and want complete freedom to explore at your own pace, this is hands down the most flexible option!
Taking the Train
The train is probably my favorite way to make this trip, especially if I’m traveling solo or just want to enjoy the scenery without the stress of driving.
You can catch either the high-speed Frecciarossa or Frecciargento train that will get you to Salerno in about 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2.5 hours, depending on which train you take. I always recommend booking your tickets in advance through Trenitalia or Italo to snag the best.
Once you arrive in Salerno, you have two options: hop on a SITA bus that runs along the coast (definitely an experience with those hairpin turns!), or catch one of the beautiful ferries that operate from April through October. With the ferry you get incredible views of the coastline from the water, and it’s way more relaxing than being on those winding roads.
Private Transfer or Driver
If you want to get there without the stress booking a private transfer or driver is the best way to get there. It’s the priciest option (usually around $250-400 depending on your group size and exact destination), but you get door-to-door service and can even ask your driver to make stops along the way.
I did this once when traveling with my parents, and our driver was so knowledgeable that he basically gave us a mini tour on the way there, pointing out historical sites and recommending his favorite restaurants. It was worth every penny!
Organized Tours
For first-timers or anyone who just wants everything handled for them, organized day tours from Rome are fantastic. These typically include transportation, a guide, and stops at multiple coastal towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello.
The downside? You’re on someone else’s schedule, which means less flexibility and usually pretty early morning departures (think 6:30 or 7:00 AM).
What You’ll See Along the Drive
The Autostrada (Highway Portion)
You will start on the A1 highway going south through the countryside. Normally highways aren’t the most scenic routes, you will see rolling hills, olive groves and traditional Italian farmhouses scattered across the landscape.
I love this portion because you get a real sense of just how much the landscape changes as you leave the historic streets of Rome behind and head toward the coast. Keep an eye out for Mount Vesuvius in the distance as you pass by Naples.
Salerno
As you approach Salerno, the scenery changes dramatically. This coastal city is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast and even if you’re not planning to stop, you’ll notice the Mediterranean opening up before you with its sparkling blue waters.
If you have time, Salerno is actually worth a quick stop. The historic center is charming, less touristy than the coastal towns along with some excellent restaurants. The waterfront promenade is good for stretching your legs if you’ve been in the car for a while!
The Legendary Amalfitana Road (SS163)
Once you turn onto the SS163, you’ll understand why this road is considered one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the world.
The road hugs the cliffside, giving you amazing views around every curve. On one side, you have dramatic rocky cliffs dotted with colorful villages, lemon groves and ancient stone buildings. On the other side of te road is the Mediterranean stretching out to the horizon in the with shades of blue and turquoise.
You’ll pass through beautiful towns like Vietri sul Mare (famous for its ceramics), Cetara (a fishing village known for its anchovies), Maiori and Minori (with their sandy beaches), and fianally Amalfi and Positano.
Around every bend is something new to see whether it’s terraced gardens with lemon trees, tiny beaches tucked into rocky coves and those charming villages the steep hillsides. I guarantee you’ll want to stop at every single viewpoint (and there are plenty!), so definitely build in some extra time if you’re driving.
What You’ll See When You’re at the Amalfi Coast
Positano
Positano is probably the most photographed town on the entire coast. This vertical village is a cascade of pastel colored buildings on the cliffside.
Wandering through Positano’s steep, narrow streets is like stepping into another time. You’ll find chic boutiques selling handmade leather sandals and linen clothing. The main beach, Spiaggia Grande, is the heart of the town. It’s lined with colorful umbrellas and beach clubs where you can rent a lounger for the day. There’s also a smaller, more secluded beach called Fornillo that’s worth checking out if you want something quieter.
Don’t miss climbing up to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta with its iconic majolica-tiled dome it’s amazing inside and out!
Amalfi Town
The town of Amalfi itself was a powerful maritime area that rivaled Venice and Genoa. In the center of the town is the magnificent Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi). The cathedral’s interior is breathtaking with golden mosaics, baroque details and beautiful artwork. Make sure to visit the Cloister of Paradise (Chiostro del Paradiso) connected to the cathedral. It’s an peaceful spot with Moorish-style arches and tropical gardens.
Amalfi’s main square, Piazza del Duomo, is buzzing with energy. It’s surrounded by cafés and gelaterias where you can sit and people-watch while enjoying a refreshing granita al limone (lemon ice).
Ravello
Situated about 365 yards above sea level, Ravello has some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the coastline. The town has long been popular with artists, writers, and musicians.
There are two must visit spots, Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Villa Rufolo has gorgeous Moorish-influenced gardens with terraces overlooking the sea. It’s so beautiful that the Ravello Festival holds concerts here every summer. Villa Cimbrone’s gardens are equally stunning, leading to the famous “Terrace of Infinity,” where classical statues frame one of the most photographed views in all of Italy.
Ravello has a quieter, more refined atmosphere compared to the busier coastal towns, making it perfect for a peaceful afternoon stroll through its charming streets and gardens.
The Smaller Gems
Beyond the big three, the Amalfi Coast is dotted with smaller villages and if you are able to, they are worth checking out.
Praiano is between Positano and Amalfi and has a more authentic, less touristy feel. It’s has some excellent seafood restaurants and a lovely beach called Marina di Praia.
Atrani is the smallest municipality in Italy and one of the most charming spots on the coast. This little fishing village has retained its character with local families still living there. Its small piazza facing the sea is perfect for an evening aperitivo.
Furore is famous for its “fjord”. It’s a gorge where a small beach sits at the bottom of towering cliffs. There’s also a photogenic bridge that has become popular an Instagram.
Cetara is a working fishing village known for its anchovy production and colatura di alici (anchovy sauce). If you want to eat where the locals eat, this is your spot!
The Food and Drink
I can’t talk about the Amalfi Coast without mentioning the incredible food! This region is famous for lemons. Specifically, the massive Sfusato Amalfitano variety that’s used to make everything from limoncello to lemon pasta to delicious lemon-infused desserts like delizia al limone.
The seafood is of course phenomenal everywhere you go. Try scialatielli ai frutti di mare (fresh pasta with mixed seafood), alici di Cetara (Cetara anchovies), or any of the amazing fish dishes that change daily based on the catch.
Other local specialties include mozzarella di bufala from nearby Campania, ndunderi (giant ricotta gnocchi), and eggplant parmigiana. And don’t even get me started on the pastries!
The Natural Beauty
The Amalfi Coast’s natural landscape is stunning. If you enjoy hiking and have time, try the famous Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) that has incredible views of the sea as you hike between Positano and Praiano.
All along the coast are beautiful grottos you can only visit by boat, including the famous Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Grotto) near Conca dei Marini.
If you’re visiting in spring or early summer, you’ll see the hillsides covered in blooming bougainvillea, wisteria, and wildflowers.
