Yellowstone National Park Highlights

Best Tours of Yellowstone Park from Jackson

There’s a lot to see in Yellowstone, but with these top-notch tours, you can see all the most popular highlights in the park. Here are the sights you can expect to see, no matter which one you book:

Grand Prismatic Spring – This technicolor hot spring is absolutely stunning. It’s the world’s 3rd-largest, with bands of orange, yellow, and green outlining the deep blue waters.

Boiling River – Boiling River is a hydrothermal feature where hot springs flow into cold river water

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone – Carved out by the Yellowstone River over thousands of years, this canyon is enormous, but much less “deserty” than the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Rather, it’s known for its Upper Falls and Lower Falls, with the latter being twice as tall as Niagara! There are various hot springs and steam vents in the area, as well.

Lamar Valley – Occasionally referred to as “America’s Serengeti”, this area is prime viewing for wildlife – particularly big herds of buffalo, and occasionally, wolves.

Old Faithful – Located in the Upper Geyser Basin, Old Faithful is accurately named as you can pretty much always expect it to erupt between every 60 to 110 minutes.

Upper Geyser Basin and Morning Glory Pool – Here, is where you’ll find Old Faithful, as well as over 150 other geysers, hot springs and fumaroles.

Hayden Valley – The Hayden Valley is popular, due to its central location, and plenty of wildlife. Big buffalo herds are known to graze here, though it’s not out of the ordinary to see elk, pronghorn antelopes, bears, and more. If you’re a hiker, you’ll enjoy the various runs and trails, such as the legendary Mary Mountain Trail which follows an old wagon trail – pretty cool to see this part of history!

Mammoth Hot Springs – Said to be described as “a cave turned inside-out”, you’ll see both the Upper and Lower Terraces. Each one has its own beautiful formations flowing over with hot water to create a serene, otherworldy scene. Oh, and if you want to spot some elk, this is one of the best places in the park to do so!

Best Times of Year to Visit Yellowstone

To Avoid Crowds – Winter is definitely the best time to go if you want to avoid crowds at Yellowstone National Park. It’s also one of the most peaceful, with snow blanketing the mountains and valleys. Oh, and there’s some of the best backcountry skiing here, too! During the warmer months, Yellowstone sees more than 2 million visitors!

To See Wildlife – You will spot critters, no matter the time of year – it all depends on what you’re most interested in seeing! In March and April, you’re most likely to see bears. The winter months tend to show moose, elk, bison, and mountain goats. Autumn is great for seeing bear, elk, and raptors, without dealing with extreme weather conditions.

For Photography – If you’re going to Yellowstone with the primary motive of shooting fantastic photos, you’re in luck, because any time of year is beautiful. However, during peak season, there are obviously going to be more people around. The wintertime is, once again, much less crowded with the snowfall and steam rising from the different hydrothermal features.

For Nice Weather – Yellowstone is located at a pretty high elevation, which can make weather kind of unpredictable. Summer is quite pleasant, sitting anywhere from 70 to 80 degrees, typically. Spring and fall range from 30 to 60 degrees, usually, which can be pretty chilly if you’re not dressed appropriately. Winter rarely gets above 20 degrees, which is frankly, frigid. Either bundle up nicely or go when it’s warmer.

So, what’s the best time to visit Yellowstone?

If you don’t have a problem with the larger crowds, you’re probably best off going between mid-June to mid-September. This time of year has the nicest weather, and is overall much more comfortable.

If you’re doing one of these tours, you’re in luck, because accommodation is the hardest thing to figure out during the summer at Yellowstone. With these tours, you’ll either head back to your hotel in Jackson, or have your accommodation already taken care of with your booking – a win-win!
