A trip to the Caribbean is never a bad idea, but with so many amazing options it can be hard to figure out where to stay. Whether it be for a wedding or a weekend vacay, it’s important to choose the right venue for you.
I dove in deep and discovered what I really wanted was a resort that offered overwater bungalows. The top 3 are the Royal Caribbean, South Coast, and Grande St. Lucian, which I’m going to compare and contrast so you know exactly which is the one you’re looking for.

Sandals Royal Caribbean Beach Resort
Overview
Blending tropical charm with British heritage, Sandals Royal Caribbean is a luxury all-inclusive resort nestled on the pristine shores of Montego Bay, Jamaica. With lush gardens, a white-sand beach that stretches as far as the eye can see, and plenty of world-class amenities, it seamlessly combines the picturesque natural scenery with opulence. Stunning panoramic views, and an all-adults vibe means that you’ll truly be able to relax and revel in romance.
Best Time of Year to Visit
The best time to visit Jamaica is from mid-December to April, which tends to have some of the most ideal vacation weather. It’s known as the “dry season”, with consistently clear skies, temperatures in the mid-70s, and no need to worry about the rain.
However, the crowds will be significantly bigger. From June to August, it gets a bit warmer with some rainfall, but nothing crazy.
Bungalow’s Location in the Resort
The overwater bungalows are located right off the coast of the white sand beach, where you’ll find the main resort property. A short boat ride is required to get here, which takes just a few minutes. There’s a little white sand island located next to the bungalows, so you’re not left to your own devices out there.
What You Should Know About The Rooms:
- Views – These are insane bungalows, with glass vision floor panels and lit water that offers amazing views of under the water at any time of day or night. I loved soaking in the outdoor Tranquility Tub or relaxing in the over-water hammock while enjoying the never-ending views of the turquoise waters.
- Décor – Inside, the hardwood floors and vaulted ceilings made for a comfortable, spacious environment that didn’t get all sandy or wet like carpeted rooms tend to after coming back from the beach. Not to mention the comfortable king-size bed with high-quality bedclothing, and an overhead fan to stay cool but never cold.
- Butler Service – After a long day enjoying the private patio with the extended sun deck and loungers, we loved taking advantage of the Butler Elite service which brought us delicious food at any time of day or night.
- Water Taxi – The private water taxi is available to bring you to and from the mainland, which is in a luxury boat and wasn’t an inconvenience at all. However, if you are staying in one of these units, please don’t go during the poorer weather months. The water can get quite rough, and would likely pose issues going to-and-from the island – if they even allowed access.
- Comfortable Bathroom – These bathrooms come with 2 sinks, a large, backlit mirror, and my favorite – the walk-in rain shower.
What You Should Know About The Sandals Royal Caribbean
- Unlimited food & drinks – Okay, this was probably my favorite part. You can literally eat delicious food at any time. Many of the 8 restaurants were open for late night snacks, with some of them staying open until 6am!
- 5 Bars with Unlimited Premium Liquor – All the bars made a good cocktail, with no additional price increase on top shelf spirits. My favorites were the swim-up bars.
- Private Offshore Island – This island is available for anyone to use; not just those staying at the over-water bungalows. The little beach here is so much fun!
- Unlimited Watersports – Including PADI-certified scuba diving, this is a great opportunity to try watersports you’ve never done before.
- Private BMW Transfer – I’m the kind of person who overthinks everything, including how I’m getting to and from the airport anytime I travel. It’s a bit of a damper when you are relying on taxis and rideshares that may not be as comfortable. However, with the private BMW transfers at this resort, it’s anything but stressful.
Other Activities Near The Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort
As I mentioned briefly a moment ago, water sports are big here. From waterskiing and snorkeling to Hobie cats and sailboats – it’s all available here. There are plenty of land activities, too, though. The classics like beach volleyball, billiards, and tennis are there, but there are plenty of tours of Mandalay Bay and the surrounding rainforests, too! I enjoyed ziplining, dune buggy off-roading, and catamaran sailing!

Sandals South Coast Beach Resort
Overview
This all-beachfront resort is the perfect melding of European architecture with Jamaican beauty and culture. Set on 2 miles of perfect white sand beach, you’ll be far away from any hustle and bustle of city life.
Sandals South Coast not only boasts the country’s biggest pool, it also has 3 different “European villages” complete with bonfire areas, luxury dripping from every surface, and tons of adventures to partake in.
Best Time of Year to Visit
I recommend planning a trip to South Coast between mid-December and April, when the weather is just right. It brings clear skies, nice temperatures around 70 to 75 degrees, and zero rain worries. Just remember lots of people have the same idea, so expect bigger crowds.
For a slightly quieter time with relatively nice weather, consider visiting from June to August, when it’s a bit warmer but less people than the peak season.
Bungalow’s Location in the Resort
The over-water bungalows are located right off the main property and white sand beach. However, there’s no need to board a boat or anything, as there’s a convenient dock that you can walk right out onto. This offers privacy while still allowing for convenient coming and going from the main property whenever you like.
What You Should Know About The Rooms:
- Décor – Vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, and custom-crafted king-size beds are more than spacious enough. The soft linens and poofy pillows will get you a good night’s rest every night. I was always the right temperature at night thanks to the convenient ceiling fan, with the smart TV supplying entertainment.
- Bathrooms – Each one is spa-style and spacious with his and hers sinks, making it easy to get ready in the morning. The large, backlit mirrors always keep you looking your best, and the walk-in rain shower is so relaxing.
- Patio – Every single bungalow comes with its own private patio in the rear with an extended sundeck, outdoor shower, sun loungers, and bistro set. It’s super romantic and a great way to enjoy outdoors without heading to the beach or pool.
- Soaking Tub – The Tranquility Soaking Tub is always a good idea, offering some of the best views of the turquoise sea.
- Private Transfers – The private transfers in a luxury car, along with beautiful welcome gifts are the perfect way to travel.
What You Should Know About The Sandals South Coast Resort
- 8 Amazing Pools – Including 4 whirlpools, a scuba pool, zero entry pool, and 2 Renaissance-style pools, there’s always the opportunity for a refreshing dip. I personally enjoyed the zero-entry pool!
- 9 Restaurants – There’s always something tasty to enjoy at any hour – even late-night cravings. Sushi on the Sand was my favorite; casual environment, amazing view, and friendly staff.
- 2 Miles of Pristine White Sand Beach – I’ve been to many resorts, and many don’t feel like much of an escape. They’re noisy, chaotic, and anything but relaxing. Located with no “civilization” around for miles, South Coast is something special.
- Unlimited Food and Drinks – Need I say more?
- Free Shows Day and Night – There are all kinds of events from beach parties to fire-eaters. You’ll never be short of entertainment!
Other Activities Near the Sandals South Coast Resort
I recommend starting every day off with a nice stroll or jog on the beach before coming back for a dip in the pool. Rick’s Café is a must-see, with some of the most breathtaking views while you sip on a tropical cocktail. If you’re into nature, seeing the YS Falls in the middle of the rainforest or checking out Lover’s Rock on a catamaran is always a good move. Dunns River Falls and the Great River are tons of fun, too!

Sandals Grande St. Lucian Beach Resort
Overview
Boasting natural beauty, diverse activities, and vibrant culture, the Sandals Grande St. Lucian encompasses the essence of this stunning island nation wonderfully. Sitting right on Rodney Bay, which is known for having the most tranquil waters in all of the country, it feels like you’ve walked right into a postcard.
The resort itself is opulent, with a 3-story lobby, championship-level golf, and so much more. Never short of volcanic mountain and sea views, this peninsula makes for one of the most romantic environments in the Caribbean.
Best Time of Year to Visit
From mid-December to mid-April, it’s very dry with clear skies and mid-70s temperatures. This is going to be the biggest tourist season, but I’ve also gone between June and November and it was really nice. It can get a bit hotter and/or warmer during this time, but there are much fewer tourists around.
Bungalow’s Location in The Resort
They’re located right off the white beach closest to the main entrance. There’s no need to take a boat or anything out to them – there’s a beautiful boardwalk located just far enough from the rest of the resort for additional privacy. However, it’s still close enough that you can easily access all the amenities the resort has to offer.
What You Should Know About The Rooms:
- Décor – Dark wood combined with neutral-toned, soft linens create a very elegant, clean feel. The mosaic tile in the bathroom is beautiful, with a large, backlit mirror to make getting ready a breeze.
- In-Room Bar – A little drink while soaking in the patio tub while enjoying St. Lucian views can never be underestimated. Each in-room bar comes with premium liquors included.
- Private Patio – Every single bungalow comes with its own private patio in the rear with an extended sundeck, outdoor shower, sun loungers, and bistro set. There are also fabric “walls” that keep others from peeking in.
- Views – Depending on the specific bungalow you get (choose from beachfront, oceanfront, or oceanview), you’ll have views of the famous Pitons mountainside to the Gros Islet. All of them are picture-perfect and completely unobstructed.
- 24-Hour In-Room Dining – If you don’t want to, you don’t even have to leave your bungalow. With included Butler service, you can have anything brought right to your room.
What You Should Know About Sandals Grande St. Lucian
- Unlimited Golf – Even if you don’t consider yourself a golfer, trust me, you have to try these amazing golf greens out. There are 2 courses here, from beginner to master-level.
- Access to 3 Resorts – With round-trip transport included between all 3 resorts, you’ll get to try all restaurants, beaches, and amenities at not only Grande St. Lucian, but Halcyon Beach and Regency La Toc.
- Set on Own Peninsula – There’s literally no traffic, no buildings – no civilization around! It’s pure paradise here, with full 360 views of the natural beauty which surrounds the resort.
- Unlimited Food and Drinks – Need I say more?
- Day and Night Entertainment – With all kinds of live shows and entertainment options like PADI-certified scuba diving, amenities from 3 resorts, and parties, there’s never a moment to be bored.
Other Activities Near The Sandals Grande St. Lucian Resort
The islands are filled with adventure and sightseeing opportunities, from deep-sea fishing to canopy tours. My favorite was the Jeep & Zip Safari where we got to see the rugged coastline to the depths of the rainforest! However, I also recommend doing the St. Lucia Drive and Snorkel Experience to see the land and underwater wonders of St. Lucia.

Why You Should Stay in an Over Water Bungalow
- Uniqueness – Overwater bungalows aren’t anything like your average hotel room. This luxury experience lets you truly disconnect, completely surrounded by turquoise water. These even come with a glass-bottomed panel so you can watch the water and sea life below.
- Features – Not only do they offer the best views around, they come with wide decks, overwater hammocks, soak tubs, and plenty of privacy. I love the private decks that let you really stretch out and relax in the open air.
- Open Space – Few places in the world offer this balance of privacy and access to open space and amenities. You can choose to head back to the main resort area when you’d like, but you can always head back to the serene calmness of the bungalow.
- Top-Notch Service – While I’d be willing to say all Sandals resort options provide great service, the overwater bungalows come with Butler Elite service round-the-clock. In addition, you get luxury chauffeur transfers from the airport, and much more.
Why You Should Choose a Sandals Resort
- Safety – Safety is usually everyone’s number one priority when traveling, and I can say that Sandals always gives me the peace of mind that allows me to truly relax. Each resort has security like a gated community – even the beach has security! No one who isn’t a guest or employee is allowed on site.
- Service – I don’t know what kind of hiring process Sandals goes through, but they’re doing something right. The service is always top-notch, with staff willing to go above-and-beyond to help.
- Unlimited Water Sports – Free kayaking, water skiing (at certain locations), sailing, paddle boarding, snorkeling – the list goes on and on!
- Delicious Food – You know what’s disappointing? Getting all-inclusive meals and having them taste like cardboard. This has happened to me before, but never at a Sandals resort. The food is all delicious, and I’m talking about literally every one of their restaurants.
- Unlimited Drink Quality – With top-shelf spirits included at no additional price, you never have to worry about a gnarly hangover due to that cheap vodka or tequila you were drinking endlessly at the pool the day before.
- In-Room Amenities – Of course, this varies widely depending on the room category, but all of them include king-size beds, quality shower products, in-room bar with juices, local beers, and more!
- Free Airport Transfers – It’s not exactly fun figuring out whether or not your taxi driver is going to rip you off first thing when you get out of the airport. Just head to the Sandals desk or lounge, and they’ll take care of everything else for you.
Why You Should Have Your Wedding at a Sandals Resort
- Beautiful Locations – Sandals covers the Caribbean, though each is different. However, all of them are absolutely breathtaking with views of turquoise waters, mountains, striking sunset locations, and more.
- Attention to Detail – When it comes to your wedding, you want everything done right. The staff at Sandals does a fantastic job recommending and catching even the tiniest details.
- Customizable – No one wants a cookie-cutter wedding. After all, the celebration should reflect the couple and their personality. You have virtually endless options that suit your tastes, though the staff can also make recommendations if you’d like.
- Service – You don’t have to worry about your guests being displeased at your wedding, thanks to the amazing service from staff. It’s almost like they can read your mind!
- Incentives – The more guests from your wedding that book rooms, the more rewards you get. For example, if your party has booked 12 rooms, you’ll receive $1k towards a catamaran cruise, room upgrade, or 2-minute wedding recap video. Couples who stay 6+ nights will receive a credit of $1,500 or more for use at the resort.
