The first time I stood on Langjökull in a rented snowsuit, the wind was doing about 30 miles an hour and I could not feel my face.

Ninety seconds later I was on a snowmobile doing 25 miles an hour across a glacier the size of a small country. I have not stopped talking about it since.

Why Snowmobiling in Iceland Is Worth It

You are riding on top of an ice cap. That is the whole pitch, and it does not need dressing up.

Iceland has glaciers you can drive to, gear up at, and ride across in under an hour from parking your car.

No mountaineering course. No permit.

Most operators take you at 8 years old and up, and the machine does the hard work once you learn the throttle and brake.

This is not for people who need five-star service and zero wind in their face. It is for people who want to say they drove a snowmobile across an ice cap in the Highlands of a volcanic island, and mean it.

If you get seasick on a bumpy ride or you hate cold hands even in good gloves, skip it. Everyone else, keep reading.

When to Go

Langjökull runs snowmobile tours year-round. It sits high enough, at 1,355 meters, that the snow holds up even in July.

The south coast glaciers are a different story. Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull run seasonally, usually late autumn through spring, because the snowpack down there is thinner and melts out faster.

Winter, November through March, gives you the classic postcard version. Snow cover is deep, the light is low and gold most of the day, and if you book an evening add-on you have a real shot at the Northern Lights on the same trip.

Mýrdalsjökull: The South Coast Combo
