The Lion King is absolutely my favorite Broadway show, and it’s one that’s been running for over 25 years! This makes it one of the longest-running shows in all of Broadway history, so it’s no surprise that it’s not only my favorite, but that of countless others!

Thanks to its balance of amazing storytelling, one-of-a-kind music, and stunning visuals, it’s become known as a beloved classic that I feel everyone should see at least once.

The innovative stage design is one of the most impressive I’ve seen, bringing the African savanna and all its brilliant inhabitants to life in an unexpected way!

Featuring iconic music from Elton John and Hans Zimmer, along with traditional African rhythms, it’s exciting as well as emotionally-provoking (they’ll likely be stuck in your head for days, but in a good way!).

Aside from the iconic “Hakuna Matata”, “Circle of Life”, and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”, there were plenty of other compositions I hadn’t remembered, that were incredible!

Next up is another Broadway classic which is also one of the longest-running in the city’s history! It first premiered all the way back in 1975, and while that one is a bit different, the revival we see now has been running since 1996!

This is one of those shows I feel like perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Broadway, with its sharp wit, lots of drama, a bit of sass, and plenty of incredible music and choreography.

With multiple Tony Awards and a popular film adaptation, Chicago is iconic in the United States! I was originally recommended this one from an experienced theatergoer, but I know that it’s super popular with newbies, as well.

From my own experience, it’s no surprise, considering the fantastic style, great stories, and high-quality entertainment it provides all the way through.

In contrast to the flamboyant Lion King set design, Chicago’s is more minimalist, with cabaret-style staging, which lends to the Prohibition-era Chicago vibe. However, the fierce and cunning characters ensure there’s no lack of entertainment, pulling audiences into their intense storylines.

With themes of crime, corruption, more “advanced” humor, and plenty of adult scenarios, I wouldn’t necessarily say that this show is suitable for families with younger kids. However, I can definitely see plenty of older teens enjoying it!

With a wide range of different seating areas (I recommend one of the first 5 rows), you can enjoy a prime view and see Alyssa Milano make her Broadway debut, who you may already know from various popular tv series and movies!

3. MJ The Musical on Broadway

Celebrating the “King of Pop” is no easy feat, considering Jackson’s completely revolutionary trajectory. From iconic music videos and dance moves, to his distinct voice and unmatchable melodies, to his insane live performances – no one has been able to replicate the magic he evoked.

However, MJ The Musical manages to seamlessly capture the essence of his groundbreaking performances and reveals the ups-and-downs of his legendary career.

I’ll admit that while I enjoyed quite a few of his hit songs, I wouldn’t have considered myself a big fan of Michael Jackson before I saw the show. In fact, I imagined I’d probably be checking my watch throughout, to see when it was going to end

I was very pleasantly surprised from the very moment the show started, with an electrifying beginning that instantly caught my attention and didn’t let go. While I’d say it’s a family-friendly show, there are various aspects that delve into certain

themes that are probably better suited to teens and adults. I feel that artistic minds, in general, would really find inspiration thanks to the insight into his creative process and the struggles he went through.

Even though I was never able to see him in real life, this is as close as I’ll ever come, and it was quite the experience! There are no bad seats for this show, in my opinion. It’s a must-do when in NYC, and it’s one that will surely leave you inspired and one you need to see even if you like MJ just a tiny bit.

4. Wicked on Broadway

This is yet another that I was a bit hesitant to see, as I’d never been a big fan of “The Wizard of Oz” and knew it was kind of a twist on that classic. However, I was soon captivated by Wicked just as well as everyone else was, so I’ve learned not to judge a book by its cover!

Focusing more on the backstory of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and her friendship with Glinda, the Good Witch, it’s perfect for entire families. If you’re looking for a fun few hours out with the fam, this show is perfect and super convenient to catch at the Gershwin Theater.

You have your choice from various matinee and evening showtimes as well, working into your schedule seamlessly. f you want to catch a Broadway show with a great message and isn’t at all scary, this is it.

The score by Stephen Schwartz was also quite impressive, tying into said themes of self-acceptance and empowerment. The costumes and sets were all elaborate and there was never a moment of boredom, essentially bringing the Land of Oz to life in front of our eyes.

5. Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway

It’s no easy feat bringing Disney classics to life, and even though The Lion King was pulled off quite well, it’s the exception rather than the rule. However, Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway is right alongside it as one of the best adaptations a beloved animated film.

The production features elaborate sets and thoughtful costumes that almost make you feel like you’re in the magical city of Agrabah.

This rendition of the 1992 film brings all the original cast of characters to the stage that you know and love, making it ideal for adults and children, alike. With plenty of rich, vibrant colors and a storyline revolving around royalty, expect opulence and wild clothing!

Something I wasn’t expecting was the high level of energy and interesting tricks involved (like fireworks!) – something that absolutely kept the younger kids’ attention!

With a nice balance of humor, hardships, magic, and romance, there are many different layers to appeal to any theatregoer. Right in the heart of Broadway you’ll find New Amsterdam theater, so it’s very easy to find and get inside.

If you’re looking for a Broadway show that is practically guaranteed to impress, look no further than Moulin Rouge! That’s right – you don’t have to go all the way to Paris to experience the magic of this astonishing show!

Going into the show was very pleasant, with polite staff welcoming us into the Al Hirchfield theatre, with quick security. Our seats were amazing, and the theater was beautiful, with all its fantastic décor and lighting.

The scenography was one of the most impressive out of all the Broadway shows I’d been to, with lavish sets, bold costumes, and on-point choreography that worked together to transport us to the bohemian late-19^th-century Paris.

The elaborate design will immerse you in the famous cabaret, which is exciting, seductive, and evokes a sense of wonder that will have you pondering what’s next!

Of course, it’s famous for its musical aspect, which is a dynamic mix of beloved pop hits from various eras, creatively woven into the storyline (along with some new songs to freshen things up!). The performances were amazing, with powerful vocals, evocative acting, and impressively fast costume changes!

Exploring themes of passion, sacrifice, and following your dreams, it’s more geared towards adult audiences, though there’s nothing overtly “adult”.

Overall, I’d say it’s a fantastic option for anyone looking for a show offering emotional depth, visually-impressive details, and a modern soundtrack that most will recognize.

7. Back to the Future the Musical on Broadway

The Back to the Future the Musical on Broadway has won all kinds of awards, from the Olivier Award for “Best New Musical”, 4 “WhatsOnStage” awards, and has quickly become one of the crowd favorites!

Whether you’ve seen the original movie or would like to, this show is a fantastic alternative – they even sound like the film actors! This is a fun-filled, lighthearted show perfect for all ages, with tons of cool effects!

Bringing an 80s vibe to the modern-day stage, this show captures the movie through a fresh lens with the same magic and humor the original fans loved. However, it did introduce plenty of new aspects and inventive uses of technology that I found cool.

I’d say this show had some of the most impressive visual effects and smart set transformations I’ve seen – particularly the iconic DeLorean time machine!

The score features plenty of the original songs and classics from the film, keeping energy high throughout the show. The cast’s performances were amazing, honoring the characters from the film while injecting a fresh charisma and uniqueness that spices things up.

Their chemistry with each other was contagious, and it was clear that they were close, which only added to the on-point performances.

I’d say with this one there are also no “bad” seats, but for the most immersive experience possible, definitely try to get some up close! Be prepared for lots of laughs and an overall heartwarming, nostalgia-invoking time on Broadway no matter if you’re a newbie, or your age!

Airports & Entry

The city of New York has three main airports: John F Kennedy International Airport, La Guardia Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport.

AirTrain is the most convenient way to get from JFK Airport to the city. It connects the subway with the airport and you can get to Manhattan in an hour and for a cost of just $2.75. Other way to get to the center is to take an express bus to Grand Central Terminal or Port Authority, which will take you 1,5 hour and cost you $18.

The approximate taxi fare is $52, but tolls, tips, and rush hour surcharges are not included. Taxis can be found at the taxi dispatch booths. Or you can use services such as Uber.

Although La Guardia is situated closest to Manhattan, it is considered the least accessible by public transport airport of New York City. To get to the center, you need to take an express bus #Q70, which will bring you to the 74^th Street – Broadway metro station and will cost you $15.

The flat taxi cost varies between $34 and $53, excluding tips and tolls. Uber service is also an option.

To get to New York City center from Newark Liberty International Airport, take an AirTrain to Newark Airport train station. There you can change to any train, which goes to New York Penn station, and it will cost you $13.

Taxi fares vary from $60 to $80, and do not include tips or tolls. You can take a taxi, use Uber, or choose a similar service.

Planning Tips

If you are planning to visit a musical, you won’t be needing an evening gown. Your clothes can be casual (dark jeans and a shirt will do), but neat and clean. A cocktail dress for a woman will be appropriate. But you won’t need your diamonds or a bow tie.

You should also consider your other plans for New York City, before making a packing list. Are you planning to walk a lot? Bring comfortable shoes or snickers. Going for a picnic in the Central Park? Planning to dine in a luxury establishment? All your plans will require different clothing.

The Blue Note, situated in Greenwich Village, is, probably, the most well-known jazz club, as well as the Village Vanguard, located in the same district. However, these are the places for people with high travel budget. If you are looking for something simpler and cheaper, head to Fat Cat or Smalls, standing just a block away from each other, also in Greenwich Village.

If you are into passionate Afro-Caribbean music and love Latina dancing, New York City is a great place for you too! Getting Around

Getting around the city of New York is not difficult, as it has an extremely extended system of public transportation. Subway, buses, commuter rail, as well as ferries, operate on a regular basis.

The simplest way to get from one point to another inside the city limits is by subway. You might be scared by the horror stories about New York subway criminal situation, but it’s almost completely in the past nowadays. Anyway, you should still beware and not attract criminals.

Keep in mind, though, it might be hard to catch a taxi during the rush hours. And, of course, remember about traffic jams. It might be better to take a subway if you are in a hurry!

Ferries connect the heart of New York with its islands. Staten Island Ferry starts at the Battery Park in the south of Manhattan and goes to Staten Island. It’s not only a great way of transportation, but also an opportunity to see New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty on the way. The big bonus is that it’s free.

New York Waterway Company operates ferries between the city and New Jersey Hudson River Waterfront, stopping also in Brooklyn and Queens. These ferries are not free, so keep that in mind.

New York Water Taxi are ferries painted yellow, like famous New York cabs. They connect points within Manhattan, as well as some points in Brooklyn and New Jersey.

Accommodations

The Big Apple is, probably, one of the most expensive cities to live in. If you decide to visit New York, be ready to pay, at least, $100 for a double room in a hotel, and a minimum of $50 for a bed in a hostel dormitory. However, that is if you want to stay in Manhattan.
