Bonaire Snorkel Tour Reviews

1. Bonaire Double Dip Snorkel Trip

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Departure: Harbour Village Marina, Kaya Gob. N. Debrot, Kralendijk
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes: All Snorkel gear (Prescription masks -2 to -4), Safety vests, Soft drinks and rum punch, Homemade snacks/bites, Snacks

The Double Dip Snorkel Trip is one of my favorites – not only because of the name, but because you get the chance to experience a variety of snorkeling spots and underwater environments.

You don’t even have to invest in an all-day experience, making it ideal if you’re looking to just dip your toes into the sport. With an impeccably organized staff and itinerary, you can expect a versatile time out on the water that makes for the perfect intro to Bonaire.

With multiple start times available and a relatively compact tour length, it’s one of the easiest ones to fit into a busy schedule. Start by meeting up at the snorkeling offices in Harbour Village Marina, which is easy to access, no matter where you’re staying.

The staff is there to welcome you with open arms to the nice-sized boat designed to hold around 20 people comfortably. Rather than spending your entire time at just one spot, you have the chance to compare different areas of Bonaire’s renowned reef system.

Depending on conditions, one location may feature expansive coral gardens while another offers stunning, intricate reef structures, sandy channels, or greater concentrations of sea critters. The waters here are known for amazing visibility, which means you’ll have a much greater opportunity to see things like sea fans, sea turtles, and much more.

I liked the little break between snorkeling sessions, where we got to just relax, soak up the scenery around us, and chat with the staff about fun anecdotes, what they’ve seen before, and more.

Whether you’ve been snorkeling a billion times or it’s your first time, you have the pros there to instruct you and make sure you’re doing everything right. Focusing more on marine life, reef diversity, and awareness, it’s the perfect combination of sightseeing, adventure, and education.

2. Klein Bonaire Marine Park Snorkeling Excursion

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Departure: Cruise port pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM, 2:00 PM
  • Includes: Beverages and water, Snacks, Professional guide, Use of Snorkelling equipment, Use of Floatation devices for more comfort during snorkeling

The Klein Bonaire Marine Park Snorkeling Excursion showcases one of the area’s most celebrated natural treasures, and is a must-see for anyone even remotely interested in sea life.

Sitting right off Bonaire’s western coast, Klein Bonaire (or aptly-named “small” Bonaire), it is an uninhabited island surrounded by protected waters that constantly rank among the Caribbean’s finest snorkeling spaces.

It’s such an incredible place that feels completely untouched by humanity, and thankfully have pristine reefs and surrounding landscapes. Your meetup spot will vary, depending on if you’re staying on the island or coming in on a cruise. If the former, you’ll meet up at the Harbor Village Marina, which has parking, if that’s a concern.

For those arriving on a cruise, you’ll be picked up and brougt back, which is ultra convenient and saves you time and money. Even more convenient, is the fact that you have plenty of different start times to choose from in order to create a seamless itinerary for your day’s scheduling.

Your experience starts by boarding your boat, learning all about local history and other cool insights from our local guides. They were the perfect balance of professional and relatable, pointing out all kinds of sea critters and other points of interest along our adventures.

One of them got in the water with us and helped one of our group members with some stress about snorkeling for the first time, which turned out to be a beautiful experience for us all (tour maxes out at just 10 guests for a more intimate vibe).

The snorkeling was so incredible, and we had the chance to check out all kinds of reefs, tropical fish, seagrasses, mangroves, and so much more! Onboard, we had unlimited juice, soft drinks, and snacks, so we were all fueled up and refreshed between snorkeling sites.

3. Luxury Snorkel Trip on a Spacious Wooden Schooner and Local Lunch

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Departure: 5 Kaya C.E.B. Hellmund, Kralendijk
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM
  • Includes: Soda, lunch, bottled water, alcoholic beverages, snorkel gear, snorkel vest, private transport

If you’re looking to combine the fun and excitement of snorkeling with some comfort and classic Caribbean sailing, it’s hard to get better than the Luxury Snorkel Trip on a Spacious Wooden Schooner and Local Lunch.

This schooner is one of the most beautiful vessels I’ve ever been on, creating an incomparable vibe that feels like you’ve traveled back in time to when things were simpler.

It’s the chance to experience a traditional wooden ship like the olden days, with a top-notch captain and crew there to make sure you’re safe, entertained, and having one of the best excursions of your life!

Just like the other tours I’ve covered, this one also comes with a few different available start times to choose from. I personally recommend the morning option, as we completely avoided crowds, and the weather was perfect.

The schooner was way more comfortable and spacious than I expected, and it felt more refined and relaxed than the smaller snorkeling boats I’d been on. We had plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy the view while listening to the captain’s stories about everything from the island’s history to the varied sea life we were about to see.

Snorkeling is obviously the central part of the tour, and we got to visit carefully selected reef sites known for healthy coral formations and a ton of marine life.

Expect to see schools of vibrant fish, coral gardens, and perhaps sea turtles and other critters – excellent visibility makes sightings much more likely! All snorkeling gear and instruction is included, and you can use floating devices if you need to do so to stay comfortable.

We got to swim with some Angelfish, Parrotfish, Rays, and so many more breathtaking beings! If you aren’t up for swimming or snorkeling, feel free to stay on board and enjoy the real bar, serving up mixed drinks, beer, wine, soft drinks, juices, and so on.

It’s definitely the most well-rounded tour of its kind, and for just a slightly higher ticket price, it’s well worth it. I’d recommend this one to everyone from solo travelers to families traveling with kids – after all, you don’t need to get in the water for a great time.

4. South Island Tour and Snorkel Combo

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM, 1:00 PM
  • Includes: Use of snorkeling gear, instruction, bottled water

Next up, is the South Island Tour and Snorkel Combo, which is easily one of the most comprehensive itineraries of any of these selections. If it’s your first time in Bonaire, you pretty much HAVE to do yourself the favor of going on this sightseeing-snorkeling duo that covers all the essential sights.

If you’re short on time but don’t want to skimp out on anything, it’s hard to get better than this. With a small group size capped at just 12 participants, you can expect a more private, intimate experience that honors the raw beauty of Bonaire.

Things feel a bit more exclusive right off the bat, with an included hotel pickup – something that most other snorkeling tours don’t offer. You’ll save money and the hassle of having to get to a meetup point yourself – if you’re at a port, they’ll pick you up, as well.

Your itinerary may vary a bit from mine, but generally, you can expect to start by visiting the South of Bonaire by private vehicle. Along your route, learn all about the island’s history, including sights of wildlife, Cargill, historic slave huts, and more.

The colorful salt mountains, beautiful coastal vistas, and flamingos were all some of the highlights for me, and it was fascinating learning about local culture, ecology, and more, from locals.

The snorkeling was the ideal way to complement the land tour, taking us to se reef fish, coral formations, and explore in the crystal-clear waters at our leisure.

It’s comprehensive, convenient, and quite budget-friendly when you consider that it’s essentially two tours in one. I’d recommend this one to literally anyone looking to maximize value.

5. Bonaire Bioluminescent Night Snorkeling

Tour Highlights:

  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Departure: Bonaire Cruise Pier, Kralendijk,
  • Departure Time: 7:00 PM
  • Includes: Guide, use of snorkeling equipment, air-conditioned vehicle, snorkel lights

Last but certainly not least, is the Bioluminescent Night Snorkeling, which is unlike anything else I’ve experienced. Clocking in at just 1.5 hours, it’s a fantastic way to see a part of Bonaire many tourists miss, in quite possibly the most immersive format.

If you’re looking for a Bonaire snorkeling tour that’s affordable and magical, it’s hard to beat this excursion. It may be a bit unusual, but it’s certainly one of the most memorable experiences one can have anywhere in the Caribbean.

Rather than showing off the local reefs during the daytime  – like most tours do – this one introduces you to a completely different underwater world lit up by the natural blue bioluminescence. Starting at 7:00 pm, it’s perfect if you already have the daytime full with other plans – especially if you’re looking to explore local nature.

As a bit of a nerd, this was one of my favorite tours in regards to the educational aspect that you get to apply firsthand. Our guide was a local expert who did a great job of explaining the science behind bioluminescence, offering context about the little guys responsible for the light shows.

Night snorkeling was way more fun and a lot less scary than I expected – in fact, the dark water heightened the awareness and marine activity. While never a guarantee, you’re much more likely to spot critters you don’t get to see in the daytime.

We got to see the bioluminescence in the water and on the ocean floor, and I don’t think I’d ever get tired of watching how the differen groups of algae lights up at different types. If you’re looking for a truly unique snorkeling experience, do yourself a favor and sign up for this one!

A Guide to Bonaire Snorkel Tours

You walk straight off a rocky shoreline into water so clear you can count fish thirty feet down, no boat required, which is the single thing that makes Bonaire different from almost every other Caribbean island on a snorkeler’s list.

Most tropical destinations build their snorkeling around a boat trip to somewhere offshore. Bonaire built an entire tourism identity around the fact that you often do not need one at all, and that shore access, combined with one of the best-managed marine parks in the world, is the real reason serious snorkelers rate this island so highly.

Why Snorkel in Bonaire

The Bonaire National Marine Park wraps the entire coastline of the island, protected water home to more than 340 species of tropical fish along with seagrass beds and mangroves that most Caribbean destinations lost decades ago. This is not a marketing claim, it is the result of genuine, sustained conservation management by STINAPA, the foundation that runs the park.

Shore diving and shore snorkeling are Bonaire’s actual specialty. You can walk into excellent reef from dozens of points around the island without ever booking a boat, which makes this one of the most independent-traveler-friendly snorkeling destinations in the Caribbean.

That said, a boat trip to Klein Bonaire, the uninhabited island just offshore, is still worth doing even if you spend the rest of your trip snorkeling from shore. The reef and the turtle sightings there are different enough from the mainland shoreline to justify the short ride.

Kralendijk, the island’s small capital, translates roughly to coral dike, a name that tells you something about how central the reef has always been to how Bonaire sees itself. This is not a place that discovered snorkeling as a tourism opportunity recently, it built its whole identity around protecting the water long before that became a selling point elsewhere.

When to Go

Bonaire sits outside the Caribbean hurricane belt, which means consistent conditions and warm water essentially year round. This is one of the more weather-reliable snorkeling destinations covered in this guide series, so season matters less here than almost anywhere else.

Morning trips generally offer calmer water and better visibility before afternoon wind picks up, a pattern that holds true whether you are snorkeling from a boat or walking in from shore. Book boat tours a couple months ahead if your dates are fixed, since the more popular Klein Bonaire excursions do sell out.

What You Will Actually Do

The Marine Park Fee, and Why You Need It

Before anything else, understand this. Every snorkeler entering Bonaire’s protected waters needs a STINAPA Nature Fee tag, currently $25 per person, valid through the end of the calendar year regardless of when you buy it.

Divers pay a separate, higher rate.

You buy this at dive shops, the Tourism Office in Kralendijk, STINAPA’s own offices, or some resorts, and you need the physical tag or wristband to legally enter the water anywhere in the park. Cruise ship passengers are the one exception, generally exempt from this fee.

This is not a scam or an upsell, it is what funds the reef maintenance and conservation that makes Bonaire’s water this clear in the first place. Budget for it before you land rather than being surprised at a dive shop counter.

A few practical rules come with the tag. No touching coral, no feeding fish or other marine life, no gloves in the water, and reef-safe sunscreen only, meaning nothing containing oxybenzone or octinoxate.

None of this is unusual for a protected marine park, but Bonaire enforces it more consistently than a lot of destinations that post the same signs and do little else.

Shore Snorkeling

Because so much of Bonaire’s best reef sits close to the coastline, renting gear and walking in yourself is a completely legitimate way to spend most of your trip. Mask, snorkel, and fin rental runs roughly $5 to $15 a day at dive shops around the island, and several operators, including Aqua Fun Bonaire, offer beginner instruction alongside the rental if you want a quick primer before heading in.

Bring dive booties or sturdy water shoes for shore entries. Much of the coastline here is coral rubble rather than sand, and bare feet do not hold up well against it.

Klein Bonaire by Boat

A short 10 to 15 minute boat ride gets you to Klein Bonaire, an uninhabited island with some of the clearest water and most reliable turtle sightings in the region. Guided trips here typically run $50 to $75 per person including the water taxi, or you can join a longer group excursion that adds a second reef stop.

Standard two-stop snorkel boat tours run around three to three and a half hours, capped at a relatively small group size, often around 10 guests, with unlimited snacks and drinks included on board. Several operators offer hotel or cruise ship pickup, worth confirming when you book rather than assuming it is automatic for every listing.

Lac Bay Mangroves

A different kind of trip entirely, guided clear-bottom kayak tours through Lac Bay let you paddle through Bonaire’s mangrove ecosystem with snorkel gear on hand to look closer at what lives among the roots. A knowledgeable guide will walk you through the four mangrove species here and why this ecosystem matters as much to the reef’s health as the reef itself does.

This is worth adding as a second or third day activity rather than your only snorkeling outing, since it is a genuinely different experience from either shore snorkeling or a Klein Bonaire boat trip.

Where to Book

  • Aqua Fun Bonaire. Gear rental, guided boat tours to Klein Bonaire, and beginner instruction all in one operator, a solid starting point if you are new to the island and want local advice on conditions.
  • Epic Tours Bonaire and SeaCow Snorkeling. Two well-reviewed operators running small-group boat excursions, worth comparing directly against each other for schedule and price.
  • H2O Visions Bonaire. Private, customizable tours with accommodations for physically challenged travelers on request, useful if a standard group format does not fit your needs.
  • Independent shore snorkeling. Rent gear from any dive shop, buy your marine park tag, and go at your own pace, a genuinely strong option given how much good reef sits within walking distance of the coast here.

What It Costs

The STINAPA Nature Fee runs $25 per person for snorkelers, valid through the calendar year, required before you enter the water anywhere in the marine park. Cruise passengers are typically exempt, so confirm your specific status before assuming you need to pay it.

Gear rental for shore snorkeling runs $5 to $15 a day depending on the dive shop. A guided Klein Bonaire trip with water taxi runs $50 to $75 per person, while a longer two-stop boat excursion with snacks and drinks included tends to land in a similar range once you compare a few operators directly.

Private and specialty tours, including the Lac Bay mangrove kayak trip or a bioluminescence night snorkel, run at their own separate rates depending on the operator, generally above the standard day-boat price given the smaller group sizes and specialized guiding involved.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead is standard across most operators, worth using if weather or your own schedule shifts unexpectedly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need to pay the marine park fee?

Yes, unless you are a cruise ship passenger, who is typically exempt. Every snorkeler entering Bonaire’s protected water needs the STINAPA tag, and it funds the conservation work that keeps the reef in the condition it is in.

Can I snorkel without a boat tour?

Absolutely, and many experienced snorkelers consider this Bonaire’s real strength. Rent gear, buy your marine park tag, and walk in from shore at dozens of points around the island.

Is Klein Bonaire worth the extra cost of a boat trip?

Yes, if turtle sightings and slightly different reef conditions matter to you. It is a short ride and a reasonable add-on even if you plan to shore snorkel for most of your trip.

What should I wear on my feet for shore snorkeling?

Dive booties or sturdy water shoes, not bare feet or flip-flops. Much of Bonaire’s coastline is coral rubble rather than sand, and it is rough on unprotected feet.

Is Bonaire snorkeling good for beginners?

Yes, particularly with a guide or instructor for your first outing. The calm, current-light water and extensive shore access make this an easier destination to learn in than most other Caribbean snorkeling spots.

What time of year is best to visit?

Bonaire sits outside the hurricane belt and stays warm and generally calm year round, so timing matters less here than at most tropical destinations. Morning trips still beat afternoon ones for water visibility regardless of season.
